Smart Garden Setup
The Hardware Behind
Smart Gardening
Great software starts with great data. These are the sensors, cameras, and controllers that give Garden Intelligence — and any serious smart garden — a real-time view of what's happening in the soil and on the plant.
Why hardware is the foundation
Weather & Soil Sensors
Temperature, humidity, rainfall, soil moisture, electrical conductivity, and pH measured continuously at your specific location — not from a weather station miles away. This granular data is what lets Garden Intelligence score each zone's suitability for each plant.
Garden Cameras
Numbers tell part of the story; images tell the rest. Cameras positioned over planting zones let AI see what you see — leaf color, canopy density, signs of disease or pests, actual growth stage. Visual data turns sensor readings into a complete health picture.
AI in the Middle
Sensors and cameras produce raw data. AI turns that data into understanding: this plant is stressed, that zone is overwatered, the soil EC is climbing toward a threshold. Without the hardware providing real inputs, AI is guessing. With it, AI is observing.
Smart gardening begins in the soil, not in software. The most sophisticated AI analysis is only as good as the data it receives — which means your hardware is the foundation of everything Garden Intelligence does. When sensors continuously measure conditions and cameras capture visual state, the AI can see your garden almost as clearly as you can. Weather stations track what the sky is doing; soil probes track what's happening underground; cameras provide the ground-truth view that connects data to reality. Together, they feed Garden Intelligence the real-time environmental picture it needs to give you advice that actually fits your garden.
Recommended hardware
Everything below is hardware we use in our own gardens and have integrated directly into Garden Intelligence.
Ecowitt
Weather & Soil MonitoringEcowitt makes the most capable consumer-grade weather and soil sensors available today. Their ecosystem of wireless sensors pairs with a central hub that syncs data to the cloud every few minutes — giving Garden Intelligence a continuous, real-time picture of your garden's microclimate.
Wittboy Weather Station + GW2000 Kit
Best ValueThe best way to start — the flagship GW2000 hub bundled with the WS90 7-in-1 weather station. The GW2000 supports up to 8 sensor channels and a built-in array port; the WS90 covers wind, rain, solar, UV, temperature, and humidity with no moving parts.

Starter KitA ready-to-run soil monitoring starter kit: the GW1100 WiFi gateway bundled with a WH51 soil moisture sensor. Perfect if you already have weather coverage and want to add per-bed soil data right away.
Shop now →WS90 7-in-1 Weather Station
Wind speed and direction, rainfall, solar radiation, UV index, temperature, and humidity — all in one compact unit. No moving parts means longer life in garden environments. Add to any existing GW1100 or GW2000 hub.
Shop now →GW1100 WiFi Gateway
A compact, reliable gateway for smaller Ecowitt sensor networks. Connects wireless sensors and syncs data to the cloud. A great starting point if you're new to the Ecowitt ecosystem.
Shop now →WH51 Soil Moisture Sensor
Stake-style probe that measures volumetric soil moisture at the root zone. Wireless, weatherproof, and battery-powered with 1–2 year life. Deploy one per raised bed.
Shop now →WH52 Soil Moisture + EC + Temperature Sensor
Everything the WH51 does, plus electrical conductivity (a proxy for soil nutrient salinity) and soil temperature. The premium sensor for Garden Intelligence fit scoring.
Shop now →Netro
Smart Soil SensorThe Netro Whisperer is a solar-powered, wireless soil sensor that measures moisture, temperature, and light at the root zone. It syncs data to the cloud and integrates with Garden Intelligence to give each zone a continuous read on soil conditions — no wiring, no batteries to replace.
Netro Whisperer 2nd Gen Smart Plant Sensor
Stake directly into a planting bed and it starts transmitting. Measures soil moisture, temperature, and ambient light. Solar-powered with a built-in rechargeable battery — fully self-sustaining outdoors. Garden Intelligence reads Whisperer data to inform zone health and irrigation scheduling.
Shop now →Rachio
Precision Irrigation ControlRachio is the most popular smart sprinkler controller in the US for good reason — it's reliable, intuitive, and packed with weather intelligence. For gardens with traditional sprinkler systems, Rachio delivers precision scheduling and integrates directly with Garden Intelligence for per-zone irrigation tracking.
Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller (4-Zone)
The compact option for small gardens and simple irrigation layouts with up to 4 zones. Same smart scheduling and weather intelligence as the larger models.
Shop now →Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller (8-Zone)
Most PopularThe standard choice for most home gardens. Controls up to 8 zones, uses local weather data to skip unnecessary watering, and provides detailed usage history.
Shop now →Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller (16-Zone)
For larger properties with more than 8 irrigation zones. Same great platform, double the capacity.
